LILLI HOLLEIN 
Museum Director. Festival founder. Design specialist. Exhibition curator.

Founder of the Vienna Design Week, design specialist, curator, general director and scientific director of the MAK: As co-founder and director of the Vienna Design Week, Lilli Hollein has contributed to creating a broad awareness of design in all its facets. She has developed exhibitions on architecture and design for the Berlin gallery Aedes, among others. In 2007, she was commissioner for the Austrian contribution to the Architecture Biennale in São Paulo. As MAK general director, she has set herself the goal of opening the museum to a diverse audience, shedding new light on the diverse MAK collection from a contemporary and postcolonial perspective and strengthening the feminist angle.

Art and design have an enormous power to drive socio-political issues and questions of the Anthropocene. That has always motivated me. The MAK plays a special role here and represents many things that are relevant in people’s everyday lives. I believe in its potential as a social moderator.

More than ever, museums are facing the challenge of opening up to a diverse public. It is a particular concern of mine to position the MAK as a democratic institution in the sense of inclusion and integration. With regard to equality, the MAK takes a clear stand behind artists.
