More than a muse
Assertive, eloquent, wise, artistic, victorious. Mother, sister, queen. The muse Calliope stood for female power. She was a source of inspiration and the most important of the nine muses.
Today's Calliopes are active, present, educated, shaping, forward-looking. They challenge the status quo. They inspire others, but also themselves. The traditional role of the female muse inspiring the male artist has long faded. Today, we are all capable of being our own muses and inspiring others at the same time.
We are both: muse and artist. The Calliope project presents women° from Austria who shaping history and are a source of inspiration for us all through their actions and achievements.

As a museum that does new and innovative things for its audience and from which other museums can learn, the Women's Museum Hittisau was awarded at the European Museum Award (EMYA) 2021 with a Special Commendation .
The focus is on women’s histories
A museum is a non-profit institution that serves society. It researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits our combined heritage. And it should be a place of social-political responsibility and democratic values. The Women's Museum Hittisau (Frauenmuseum Hittisau / FMH) is one such place.

Working together on the Calliope project.
Brought to you by the Austrian Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA), and developed by the Women’s Museum Hittisau (Frauenmuseum Hittisau / FMH), the Calliope project has been created so you can explore and discover women of Austria, and what connects them.
Bringing together players from society, culture and science, Calliope will also support Austrian cultural forums, embassies and consulates in highlighting the achievements of women – then and now – in the context of Austria's cultural work abroad.
