BEATE WINKLER
Artist. Human rights politician. Human being.
Combining art and social dialogue. Developing positive images of the future. Shaping processes on ‘How do we create a new “togetherness”? Beate Winkler is an artist and Human Rights politician. Through the diversity of her works – pictures, sculptures, flying paper rolls, paintings, installations – they become symbols of the capacity for change. Before becoming an artist, she held leading positions in the human rights sector. She was the first ever female director of an EU Agency, the current EU Fundamental Rights Agency, which she set up and headed for many years. Her #newTogether project series includes her own exhibitions, projects by other artists, interactions, film and working groups, e.g. on sustainability. In Timisoara, for example, 22 organisations came together and achieved sustainable results.

Looking back to the future. I look back on such a fulfilling, rich life and look forward with joy and confidence. I have succeeded in many things in life that I did not intend and sometimes I was glad that my wishes did not come true - life was smarter than I was. I was able to develop my very different talents: as a "political animal" I became the director of what is now the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) and as a "playful being" I live as an internationally travelling artist. I also contribute both - and more - as a lecturer (e.g. European Parliament, Centre Pompidou, academies) and author (e.g. "Zukunftsangst Einwanderung", "Unsere Chance- Handeln und Visionen in der Krise", "Es ist etwas mir, das nach Veränderung ruft. Follow the longing.") into the world. I combine my different facets, for example, with projects that focus on "visions of the future for a new us", interlink art and dialogue, bring people from different walks of life together to jointly develop possible solutions for urgent social problems of our time - with sustainable results.
I am happy to pass on my knowledge and experience - including how we can turn crises into opportunities - because one of the driving forces behind what I do and what I am is the experience that even in almost hopeless situations, undreamt-of possibilities are hidden. Living my life with joie de vivre, constantly breaking new ground and developing ideas, promoting people, our society and life itself - that's what makes me wake up every morning with curiosity and optimism: Ready for the new day with all its unexpected surprises and facets, challenges and opportunities.
